The Annual Election Period (AEP) in Medicare, also known as the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, is an important time for Medicare beneficiaries to review and make changes to their Medicare coverage. The AEP typically occurs every year from October 15th to December 7th. During this period, Medicare beneficiaries can make several types of changes to their Medicare coverage:
Switching between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage: Beneficiaries who are enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) can switch to a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), and vice versa.
Switching between Medicare Advantage Plans: If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan during the AEP.
Changing Prescription Drug Plans (Part D): Medicare beneficiaries can switch their Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during the AEP. This is particularly important if your medication needs have changed, and you want to ensure your current plan covers your medications at the best possible cost.
Enrolling in Medicare Part D: If you didn’t enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan when you were first eligible and you don’t have other drug coverage (creditable coverage), you can do so during the AEP. However, you may face late enrollment penalties if you delay enrolling without creditable coverage.
Dropping Medicare Advantage and returning to Original Medicare: If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to go back to Original Medicare, you can do so during this period.
Enrolling in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan: While the AEP primarily focuses on Medicare Advantage and Part D changes, some states allow individuals to enroll in or change Medicare Supplement plans under certain circumstances. It’s essential to check your state’s rules regarding Medigap enrollment periods.
Regarding what clients should review in September, it’s a good idea to start preparing for the AEP by doing the following:
Review Your Current Coverage: Take some time to review your current Medicare coverage. This includes your Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare plan, your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (if you have one), and any additional coverage you may have, such as Medigap or employer-sponsored plans.
Check Changes for the Upcoming Year: Medicare plans can change from year to year. In September, you should receive your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and Evidence of Coverage (EOC) from your current plan. Review these documents carefully to understand any changes in costs, coverage, or benefits for the following year.
Assess Your Healthcare Needs: Consider any changes in your health or prescription drug needs. If your health status or medications have changed, you may want to adjust your Medicare coverage accordingly to ensure it meets your current requirements.
Compare Plans: Use the Medicare Plan Finder tool on the Medicare website or consult with a Medicare counselor to compare different Medicare Advantage plans, Part D prescription drug plans, or Medigap policies available in your area. This will help you find a plan that best suits your needs and budget.
Prepare for the AEP: Once you’ve reviewed your options and decided on any changes you want to make, be prepared to enroll or make changes during the AEP, which starts on October 15th.
Remember that any changes made during the AEP will take effect on January 1st of the following year. It’s crucial to make informed decisions during this period to ensure you have the right Medicare coverage for your healthcare needs.
